It is known since 1151 as Ivan-horod. Since 1654 it is squadron town of Kaniv regiment.

It was confirmed at February, 3d, 1990 by the decision of city council executive committee. In a vert field with the argent wavy base is or boat with a gules sail, on which is or smiling sun, above boat is the argent book and a half of or gear. In the canton is the chestnut blossoming branch of natural color in a gules field. In the chief of or cartouche is the sable city name in the Ukrainian language, in its base are sickle and hammer.

Boat means memory of an ancient trading way "from Varangian to Greeks" in which the city played a significant role, a symbol of modern settlement-port.

The book and gear are symbol of settlement of students and the modern industry.

Vert field means fruitful surrounding fields and woods. Argent base means the Dnipro river. The author is B.Shulevs'kyi.
