Melitopol`

The first mentions refer to 1769 when there had been constructed a fortification which the Cossacks served in. In 1841 it got the status of a town and the modern name.

The emblem of the Russian period

The emblem of the Russian period has been confirmed on the 17th of November 1844. A shield was per fess with or and vert. In the upper part you see the Russian State Emblem in memory of the conquest of Tavrida by victorious army of Russia; in the lower part there was a or book with a cross to signify the settlement of the Christians in the district.

B.Kene project

On the 7th of March 1868 B.Kene worked out a project of a new emblem of the town: in an vert field is an or open book, from above it is or cross. In the canton there was an emblem of Tavrijs'ka province.

The shield is crowned with an argent mauerkrone with three embattlements and within two or spikes entwined with the ribbon of the Order of St.Alexander. The emblem was not approved.

The soviet emblem

It was confirmed at 1978 by the decision of executive committee of city council.

The shield per pale by gules and azure. There is or ear and a half gear with azure triangle as a symbol of a engine factory. The or chief is charged by the sable city name in the Ukrainian language.
