It was founded by Zaporozhian Cossacks. The first name was Matviivka.

The emblem of the Russian period

 

 

The emblem of the Russian period was confirmed on the 29th of July 1811. In the upper part of or and vert per fess shield a freely grazing horse; in the lower part there is a argent obliquely to the sinister side river to signify plenty of stud-farms, meadows and water.

B.Kene project

 

 

In XIX century B.Kene worked out a project of a new emblem of the town. In a or field there is sable wild horse, turning to the right, burdened with azure baldrick at the left. In the canton there is an emblem of Katerynoslavs'ka province. The shield is crowned with an argent mauerkrone with three towers and framed with two or ears, which are twined with the ribbon of the Order of St.Alexander. The emblem was not approved.

The soviet emblem

 

 

It was confirmed at 1979. In the sable shield with abaised azure fess are or half of gear, mine buildings and waste banks. The fess is charged by three or wave lines and gules flame on the or pedestal. The gules chief is charged by the argent city name.
